Nutrition News: Creating a Healthy Workplace

With many adults spending about 50% of their waking hours at work, having a healthy workplace is important and may help to keep employees motivated and engaged throughout the workweek.

If your work environment isn’t conducive to your healthy living goals, it can really derail your efforts.

Problem: You may have heard “sitting is the new smoking”.

“Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns, including obesity and metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions that includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Too much sitting also seems to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.” James A. Levine, M.D., Ph.D.

Solution: Take regular breaks.

Using a tool like www.regularbreaks.com can help to remind you to stand up and give your body the stretch it deserves.

Go the extra mile: Provide Standing or Walking Desks

Problem: Air Quality

Indoor air quality is a major concern to businesses, building managers, tenants and employees because it can impact the health, comfort, wellbeing and productivity of building occupants.

Solution: HEPA filter, Himalayan Salt Lamp, Essential Oils, Plants

Placing Himalayan Salt Lamps and HEPA Filters around the office can help to purify the air, reduce unpleasant odors and eliminate negative energy leading to easier breathing and increased energy.

Go the extra mile: Replace your furnace and A/C unit with one that monitors air quality

Have your ducts cleaned and schedule regular HVAC cleaning & maintenance.

Problem: Mid-day “pick me up”

When the clock nears the 2 o’clock mark, our lunch has digested and our mind starts to drift to dinner & what to eat next…our work day is nearly complete & we need something to get us through those last few hours…which is when we typically turn to the sweet treat in the staff room or a fancy coffee pumped full of chemical-containing syrups, too much caffeine & a mountain of whip cream.

Solution: Instead of reaching for donuts in the lunchroom or a sugary latte, opt-in for a weekly delivery of Organic Fresh Fruit.

Opt-in for My Farmers’ Market weekly delivery of Organic Fruit. Healthy Workplace Fruit Boxes are offered at a reduced price when you subscribe to have them delivered weekly, bi-weekly or monthly and consist of an assortment of approximately 40 pieces of fresh Organic Fruit.

Go the extra mile: Designate your office as a Harvest Box Drop-Off location so your staff can choose to opt-in to Fresh Local Fare.

Did you know all employees at your office can opt-in to receive a delivery of Fresh Local Fare that they can bring home from work with them?! Email me to find out more: signe@myfarmersmarket.com

Problem: Vending machine drinks & tap water.

It’s 2017 and you’re still drinking pop?! Break those bad habits with healthy alternatives!

Solution: Provide your staff with local, filtered mineral water.

Keep a stock of natural soda and have fresh, local Canadian Gold Spring Water delivered to your office to enjoy when you need to hydrate & re-energize. My Farmers’ Market offers corporate delivery of your new favourite water!

Go the extra mile: Stock the staff room fridge with healthy, hydrating beverages.

Kombuchasparkling water and natural soda not only taste great, but are an excellent substitute for typical vending machine drinks such as soft drinks and sugary juice, PLUS they won’t make your blood sugar crash, deflating your mood and robbing you of energy!

Problem: Catered lunch staff meeting.

If you want your employees to stay alert during staff meetings be sure that you’re fuelling their brain with clean energy.

Solution: Swap out the processed food with real food!

Instead of meats, cheeses, bagels and sandwiches, opt for a hardy salad made with REAL ingredients…this simple substitute can make a huge difference when it comes to the energy and attitude at the office!

Go the extra mile: Have it catered!

Did you know that My Farmers’ Market can delivery fresh, filling salads, made with real ingredients and dressed in a delicious tahini dressing from Beet Happening delivered to your office for you next meeting?! All you have to do is place the order before 12:30 the day prior to delivery! You can also set a standing order so that Beet Happening Salads are delivered weekly, bi-weekly or monthly!
